What Does the Maserati Logo Mean?

The distinctive Maserati logo is visually striking and unlike any other you’ll see on Monmouth County roads. So, what does the Maserati logo mean? The trident design of the Maserati logo was inspired by the statue of Neptune in the Piazza Maggiore in Bologna. Like the mythic god of the sea, the Maserati logo is a symbol of iconic power, strength, and mastery over the unknown. Learn more about the Maserati logo meaning, then visit Maserati of Central New Jersey in Edison to explore our new Maserati inventory today!

History of the Maserati Logo and Brand

Although the Maserati brand was founded in Bologna, Italy in 1914, it wasn’t until 1926 that they started manufacturing their own unique vehicles incorporating the Maserati logo. How did the concept for this bold logo come about?

In 1920, one of the Maserati brothers was inspired by the suggestion from Marquis Diego de Sterlich, a friend of the family, to create a badge featuring Neptune’s trident. The logo made its debut six years later with the launch of the Tipo 26.

The Maserati headquarters was relocated to Modena in 1940, but the iconic trident of the Neptune of Bologna had become firmly linked with the Maserati brand. The company has continued to display the trident on all of its vehicles, right up until this day!

The Maserati Symbol Explained

The Maserati logo's meaning is fairly straightforward once you know a bit about where the company was founded and what Neptune’s trident represents. Today, the Maserati logo is usually depicted in dark gray, but depending on when and where it appears, the trident may also be displayed in white, on a background of navy blue, black, or in one of several shades of gray. On certain vehicles, the trident is displayed stridently in red, on a field of white and blue. Referred to as the “saetta logo,” this brighter design adds another layer of symbolism:

  • The blue represents the sea—Neptune’s domain and source of strength.
  • The white or silver field represents the land; the space between the seas where Maserati vehicles rule the roads.
  • The red trident symbolizes the potent force of the Maserati vehicle itself, which delivers unparalleled performance on highways all over the world.
